Interior Designers use the 4 Layers in Lighting

Courtesy of HGTV

As always, an interior designer will tell you over and over again that lighting is key in completing the right interior design. While creating and designing a kitchen space, lighting in this design plan will be no different. While designing the lighting in your kitchen, there are 4 key layers to keep in mind.

The first layer of lighting is called the Ambient Layer and the function of this layer in designing your kitchen is to provide light in the space. This is typically seen as recessed lighting and can help open up spaces and make them feel larger. Ambient lighting will attract more people to the kitchen and allow them to feel more welcome.

The second layer entails the task layer. This layer provides more specific lighting to help illuminate key areas in the kitchen and also allows for a more upscale look. A perfect example of this form of lighitng would be under cabinet lighting.

The third layer interior designers focus on is called the focal layer and this layer is used to highlight objects such as pieces of art or architecutal details.

Us interior designers love the final and fourth layer of lighting that should be used while designing a kitchen and this is called the decorative layer hence this being the designers favorite one. This layer is used purely for fun and extra flare to the room. Frankie Cameron says, “it is meant to enhance the overall interior design of the room.”

Lighting your kitchen doesn’t need to be complex but don’t be one of the mistakes where people pick one or two lights to illuminate one of your most important spaces in your home.
