Fall is officially here! Soon (we hope), our weather will be crisper, our evenings longer, and making our favorite seasonal recipes will hit the spot. Making small changes indoors in your interior design to mirror the changes outside in lighting and temperature, makes the transition to Fall encompassing in all of your environments.
Tips for Transitioning your Dallas, Frisco, Plano or Southlake Home to Fall:
Take Notes from what’s Happening Outside and Bring it In!
Fall colors are warm and deeper than summertime brights. Foliage and seasonal food show us this. The leaves deepen, and watermelon and berries are traded out for pumpkins. Look at vibrant accessories, patterns that pop, or beachy-summery items and think about replacing them for the season with “cable-knits, tassels, fringe, and softer materials and then layer things on top of what you already have to make the space feel a little cozier and a little bit warmer” says designer Nate Berkus.
- If your home has a neutral base (like the SW color of the year, a variation on “griege”), it is easy to layer in seasonal design tones to your decor. Add depth and interest visually by bringing in a favorite Fall hue that stands out to you.
- Ideas: Deep camels, Brick Red, darker green tones, and warm oranges.
- Make it a one-step process, adding what works with your current base decor rather than taking things out and adding more. Less packing and putting away!
- Layer your textiles with pillows, throws, runners, and rugs.
Keep your Favorites, but Layer on the Change
No one needs to seasonally redesign their homes, especially in a temperate city like Dallas. Changing up your home for the seasons is not a need, but something enjoyable; it is a way to create a welcoming space that sets the scene for the ways you relax and entertain at home that differ from Summer to Fall and Spring to Winter.
“While most of us would love to go shopping for a whole new wardrobe each season, our bank accounts don’t share the same enthusiasm. This theory applies to our homes too. Throws get a little bit chunkier; pillows get a little bit more tactile; bedding kind of shifts. Even though we keep our bedding primarily white, what we throw on top of the bed changes, and there’s something really nice about that,” says Berkus.
Make Small Fall Upgrades around the House
Instead of making a complete seasonal overhaul, (Let’s be honest, who has time to even think about that?) make small design changes that continue throughout the house.
Suggestions:
- Embrace the shorter and darker days by amping up the lighting inside your home.
- Add a lamp and candles to a side table in a darker corner of your home. Bonus points if you set your lighting to a time to come on just as the day starts to fade.
- Change out your lampshades for a moodier, richer look.
- Appreciate the coziness of Fall!
- Changing your table decor and food that you serve in the Fall is obvious, but go the extra mile by changing:
- Darker servingware, trading out whites and brights for woods, dark marble, etc.
- Switch out your hand towels
- Upgrade your coffee table styling with different books and candles
- Bring in fall-toned, in-season flowers for a bold pop
- Bring the outdoors in
- Combine permanent florals and Fall Decor with natural finds from outside
- A simple glass vase with a trim of a branch with Fall Leaves looks great on your entry or dining table for a few days.
