This landing between staircases could have stayed a pass-through, the kind of space guests cross without noticing. We saw a ladies’ lounge instead, small enough and just wide enough for two chairs, a cocktail, and a little bit of mischief.
The animals came before anything else. A leopard, an ostrich, an elephant, a hippo, each one set against its own tangle of florals and framed in studded brass, turned this corner into its own watering hole. It felt right for a room built entirely around gathering, women pulling up a chair and staying longer than they meant to.
Layering a sisal rug over a plush wool one gave the space depth it did not have on its own, and the bar cart between the chairs made the invitation obvious: sit down, pour something, stay a while.
Two chairs in dusty rose chenille anchor the space, their rounded silhouettes and pale wood legs echoing a shape found throughout the house. Pillows in a soft speckled print and a marbled pink round accent add texture without competing with the art above.
The gallery wall is the true centerpiece: four animal portraits, a leopard, an ostrich, an elephant, and a hippo, each set against a different floral backdrop and framed in brass studded trim. Between the chairs, a brass bar cart holds an ice bucket, a set of pink coupe glasses, and a stack of books, while a pair of brass floor lamps with pleated shades light the corner into the evening.
Underfoot, a sisal rug patterned in white florals sits layered over a plush wool rug with a scalloped edge, and a plaid roman shade in blue, green, and cream softens the corner windows without hiding the view of the yard below.
What could have been leftover space is now the place everyone ends up, glass in hand, deep in conversation, in no hurry to head back downstairs.
