Baker Design Group has had the great privilege to work with this Uptown family in completely renovating their new townhouse from top to bottom. It is always fun having clients that have such a great vision to begin with and that they had! Designer Lisa, one of our talented Interior Designers, has given us a more in-depth look into her and Linda’s vision for the space.
Upon entering this trendy townhouse in Uptown Dallas, endless possibilities instantly flooded my thoughts. Possibly because they had already torn out built in cabinets, left exposed fireplaces and had bathtubs in guest rooms; but mainly, we just knew this new client was ready and open to a complete design overhaul. And that makes a designer’s heart race.
Looking for an overall simple and sophisticated palette with small pockets of color, we brought in punch through geometric pattern and texture, even in monochromatic executions. With little need for storage, we designed a clean simple built in, adding decorative wood detailing in cool, modern shapes that eventually compliment the rest of the patterns in the room. We brought this sort of half moon façade over to the custom mantle to truly marry the pieces together. A custom created taupe gray paint and stain treatment made this a one of a kind modern, yet warm, focal wall in the room. Anchoring the entertainment cabinet, on the other side, is a architecturally stunning mirror above a console, dressed in luxe lamps and sculptural moments.
When selecting tile for the fireplace, we knew we wanted to balance the soon-to-be rich, dark cabinets across the open space with another saturated, warm tone. We found innovative and fabulously textured tile with one of our favorite sources, Dal Tile. Bringing sparkle and sheen with our selections of metallic inspired tile and aluminum accent mosaic, we created a sophisticated and glamorous playing field to start layering in the furniture. No playing field is complete without paint! A beautiful taupey gray found a perfect equilibrium of both warm and cool throughout the entire home to set the mood for the modern, clean, jazzy sophistication that came its way.
Our client knew she wanted a sectional as well as two chairs by the fireplace so we built from there. Soft textures in complimentary grays, creams and taupe created the base as we introduced pops of bold patterns and eventually pops of bold, warm colors in the final layers. The chartreuse green found in the embroidery on the custom linen window treatments, in the undertones of the yellow medallions on a chair and in accent pillows brings in a cooler tone that is truly unique. As its tertiary color, hot orange in all shades and textures brought in with pillows, books, and custom artwork, balances the room. Use of mirrored surfaces and metallic in every shade, shape, and size helps stimulate the eye across the room as lighting in all forms of its own aids in reflecting a brilliance that truly envelops you.
We knew immediately we were wanting-no- needing a custom art piece by one of our favorite artists, Blakely Bering, to truly complete and unify the space. An incredible use of neutrals such as cream and taupe is complimented by the golds and silvers and the interjections of shades of orange, making this piece’s voice heard loud and clear. Her use of high gloss finish and actual glass pieces marry for a uniquely modern look, all to be grounded by the warmth of the wood mantle.
Little moments, from the beautiful art and accessories, to an actually fantastic looking ceiling fan fixture (a rarity – I know), to two chairs by a fireplace that provoke coffee sipping on a chilly day and catching up with friends, all make this space the sophisticated glam spot we were going for. With creativity and a desire for the unexpected, we were able to take this home from heart dropping to heart stopping. There’s not a moment I walk in now and don’t think “heart be still”.
