Construction is where design intent gets tested. Walls open up and reveal surprises. Lead times shift. A contractor makes a quick call on site that quietly changes the finished room. Without someone protecting the plan, the space you walk into at the end can look very different from the one you approved at the beginning.
Whether your remodel is in Dallas, Fort Worth or anywhere across the metroplex, here are seven things your interior designer should be doing while the work is underway.
1. Protecting the design on site
A beautiful plan only matters if it gets built. Your designer should be the one making sure construction follows the design, not the other way around. At Baker Design Group, our builders and contractors report to our design team, so every construction decision protects the original vision instead of compromising it.
2. Showing up, regularly
You cannot protect a design from an office. Regular site visits let your designer catch the cabinet installed an inch off center, the tile laid in the wrong pattern or the fixture mounted at the wrong height while it is still an easy fix, not an expensive one.
3. Reviewing the details before they are built
Some of the most important design decisions in a remodel are the least glamorous: outlet and switch placement, lighting layouts, cabinetry shop drawings, tile layouts, trim details. Your designer should be reviewing these before they are finalized, because once they are built, changing them means tearing something out.
4. Solving problems before they reach you
Every remodel has surprises. The question is who handles them. When a wall reveals plumbing that cannot move or a material arrives damaged, your designer should come to you with the issue already understood and clear options to choose from, not a crisis to sort out on your own.
5. Managing procurement and lead times
Furniture, fixtures and finishes run on their own schedules, and a single late delivery can stall an entire trade. Your designer should be ordering, tracking and inspecting every item so the right pieces arrive at the right time. Our team orders, inspects and warehouses everything until installation day, which is how we eliminate damage, delays and last-minute substitutions and keep every phase of the remodel on track.
6. Keeping the budget visible
Unexpected costs rarely come from one big decision. They come from dozens of small ones nobody tracked. Your designer should be watching the budget throughout construction and flagging changes before they add up, so you are always informed and never surprised.
7. Planning the finish line
A remodel is not finished when the contractors leave. Your designer should be planning the final stretch long before it arrives: every furnishing received and staged, every detail ready for one seamless installation. The goal is that you walk into a finished home, not a work in progress.
What it looks like when it is done right
When all seven of these are happening, a remodel feels very different. You have one point of contact instead of a dozen. Decisions come to you with context. And the space you walk into at the end is the one you fell in love with in the renderings.
As one of our clients shared after their remodel, a process that can be stressful for any family ended up feeling as seamless as possible. That is the standard every remodel should be held to.
