Designed to Let You Exhale: An Ozark Mountain Retreat

While some homes aim to impress, we designed this one to let our client exhale. Set on ~1,000 acres of Ozark wilderness, this luxury vacation home is the work of Baker Design Group, an award-winning interior design firm serving Dallas–Fort Worth and discerning clients well beyond it. For a Texas family who wanted a true escape, our team set out to create a mountain retreat that feels effortless, gathered, and unmistakably tied to its setting, managed start to finish through our fully turnkey design process.

What Makes a Luxury Vacation Home Feel Like a True Escape?

A getaway should feel different the moment you walk in. The goal for this project was simple to say and demanding to execute: every space should feel like its own retreat. That meant designing to the region rather than importing a look from somewhere else. Instead of a transplanted Texas aesthetic, we leaned into an organic, mountain-rustic sensibility, what some designers are now calling “Ozark modern,” celebrating exactly where this home lives so guests feel a genuine sense of place.

Layered natural materials do much of that work. A considered mix of metal and travertine brings in organic warmth, while art and textiles nod to the landscape and the rhythms of the season. Throughout the home, the design brings the outside in, so the views beyond the windows always feel like part of the room.

Designing Guest Suites That Feel Like a Boutique Hotel

In a home built for hosting, every bedroom matters. We approached each one as its own guest suite, regardless of size, with its own personality of color, texture, and featured art. Problem-solving the scale of furnishings for each space was essential, ensuring a king bed and the right supporting pieces felt intentional rather than crowded.

The details are where a guest suite becomes a boutique experience. In the primary suite, a custom upholstered headboard with tailored trim detail replaces anything cookie-cutter, giving the room a layered, hospitality-grade feel. Generous storage means that even longer stays never require living out of a suitcase. Every room includes a comfortable place to sit and a full-length mirror for practicality, and we selected washable, durable bedding—a turnkey detail that quietly serves both the homeowner and their guests.

spaces made for gathering

Vacation homes live and die by their gathering spaces. While each suite offers a private place to retreat, we designed the heart of this home for togetherness, including a dedicated game area that leans into the group-vacation mentality. The result is a home where you can slip away when you want to and come together when it counts.

The Logistics Behind a Flawless Out-of-Town Install

Designing a luxury home hundreds of miles from our Dallas studio is a discipline of its own. An out-of-town install leaves no room to “run back to the office” to fix something, so our process is built around precision. We plan for every single piece, curating accessories and final layers with intention to minimize back-and-forth and make sure everything arrives within a tight, coordinated window.

Behind the scenes, our team orchestrates every additional vendor and trade, plans the manpower between our designers and install team to keep the day moving efficiently, and is deliberate about how many trips we take, protecting both the timeline and the client’s resources. That level of management is what allows a far-away project to feel as seamless as one across town: every detail managed, every element intentional, from first sketch to finishing floral.
