How to Thursday: Designing A Well-Styled Dorm Room

For most students, their college dorm room is the first place where they will live on their own and creating a space that reflects their style {while giving them a feel of home} is very important. Here are some tips on how to create a well-designed space that inspires confidence, and instills a feeling of independence while living on campus.

1. Neutral Bedding

Oftentimes it is easy to fall in love with a bright pattern or trendy color palette when shopping for bedding. There are just so many gorgeous choices and our eye is naturally drawn to something a little more visually enticing. However, fight the urge to go super on-trend with your bedding choice. Instead, grab a high-quality neutral bedding that will allow you to transition through four years of changing trends. But, don’t worry. We’re not recommending a drab space. Go all out with throw pillows which can be easily mixed and matched throughout the years to give you a trendy feel without the commitment.

2. Simplifying the Bookshelf

Keep focal areas clear of clutter and add sophistication to any space by using covered books as decoration. We love using decorative books in all of our interior design projects. As an added bonus, in a dorm room, you will have ample books at your fingertips. Instead of trying to decorate around them, why not put them to work decorating for you? Simply cover them with a solid color or fun printed paper and, voila, your French book becomes an instant eye-catching accessory.

3. Choose a focal wall

Cover those drab dorm room walls with: stylish decals (think short term wall paper!), a gallery design of your favorite friends and family pictures, or a grouping of large, colorful prints. Creating a focal wall will draw attention to an intended style choice and will help to clearly define the separate areas in your dorm room and make it feel more like a small apartment rather than one single room.

4. Accessorize with functionality

The futon used to be the best answer to functional living. Luckily, multi-purpose design has come a long way! And with it, a few key ways that you can really add to your space visually, while adding function to your everyday life. One way to do this is with succulents. In order to make your dorm room feel like home, adding greenery is a great idea. As if succulents aren’t already low-maintenance enough, take it one step further with a gorgeous permanent succulent piece from Curate Florals. Another option is to create additional space in your closet by utilizing a storage ottoman to hold shoes. We also love decorative boxes used as accessory pieces throughout the room. They are a gorgeous addition to any decor and also help to minimize clutter in a pinch.
