A Vibrant Ozark Retreat: Inside Our Latest Design Transformation

Exterior of a vibrant light pink 1920s home in Ozark, Arkansas, featuring a white front porch, second-story balcony, and riverfront views.

Not every project starts with a blank canvas; this one started with a gutted 1920s house on the river in Ozark, Arkansas, and a single instruction: here’s a pink house, run with it. Baker Design Group, an award-winning interior design firm serving Dallas–Fort Worth and clients well beyond it, took that brief and turned it into one of our most colorful projects yet, a full-service interior design transformation built entirely on bold pattern, playful color, and a house that refused to be neutral.

What does a bold, colorful interior design transformation look like?

We were tasked with turning a stripped-down 1920s structure into a fully furnished, fully felt home. The concept driving every room was simple to describe and fun to execute: think “Lisa Frank goes to St. Tropez,” all dolled up with nowhere to go. Bold color, girlie detail, whimsy, and not a neutral sofa anywhere in the house.

A Living Room and Stair Parlor Built on Color

Why have a neutral sofa when you can have a blue one? In the front living room, we layered leopard print and bullion fringe onto the ottomans, leaned into bold botanical patterns, and kept every window shade fully functional so the decorative trim underneath stays on display. Just off the entry, an awkward stair parlor, the kind of in-between space most homes leave as an afterthought, became a ladies’ lounge built for cocktail hour, with a sisal rug layered over wool for texture and a gallery of animal art keeping watch over the room.

Small Rooms, Big Personality

Some of the most memorable decisions in this historic home transformation happened in the smallest rooms. The powder bath got bold wallpaper and a full jewel-box, tropical guest-bath moment. The kitchen nook, arguably the trickiest space in the house to solve, became a banquette-and-bistro setup with scalloped fabric shades layered over a peek-a-boo underlay to frame the riverside view, flexible enough to handle breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Even the cabinetry throughout the kitchen got a fresh, vibrant treatment.

A Modern-Day Golden Girls Oasis

The owners’ suite takes the concept somewhere unexpected: Miami in the Ozarks. Crisp white linens bring a boutique-hotel feel, balanced against textural pops of rattan, lacquered linen, stone, and velvet, with oversized windows wrapping the perimeter for a fishbowl view of the river below.

1,600 Square Feet of Riverside Porch Living

Outside, a wraparound porch, 1,600 square feet of it, was designed for lingering. Weather-resistant rocking chairs, pockets of seating, curated trees, and a hanging daybed built for an afternoon siesta all add up to a vibrant, secret-garden feel, ready for guests to soak up the riverside view.
